    Great everyday wear watch
I love the clean, simple, look of this watch. The fully numbered dial makes it easy to check time at a glance, and thanks to the cheerful green glow of Seiko’s Lumibrite, it’s just as easy to read in the dark. No hacking or hand winding with the 7S26 movement, but plenty accurate and reliable if worn daily. 30 meter water resistance rules out swimming/diving but it’s more than adequate protection against sweat, rain, or the occasional dunking that an everyday watch could be exposed to. As for the bracelet, I see folks removing it in favor of leather bands. To each their own, leather bands are comfortable and stylish. That said, there’s nothing wrong with the factory bracelet once you resize it. More importantly, the stainless steel bracelet can hold up to working outdoors in the heat of summer without very quickly looking and smelling like the dog’s chew toy. All in all an outstanding everyday watch that should give years of service at an affordable price. Nothing not to like with this one.

I’m a collector and this watch is legit!
Ive been a watch enthusiast for a long time and it’s kind of funny to me that I’m just buying my first Seiko 5 after all these years. I got this one because I love thedial design, which dates back to the same model worn by troops in Vietnam. It looks tough on a NATO or rubber strap, but dresses up nicely on leather. Honestly, it kind of gives me a vintage Rolex Explorer vibe. The fact that its only about $100 means I don’t worry at all about banging it around, but I still know I’m wearing a quality automatic watch. The applied numerals look fantastic and have more powerful lume than any swiss watch I own. Seiko is king of lume. It does wear a little small at 37mm, but it’s perfect on my wrist. Comfortable and unobstrusive. Like most Seikos, it looks and feels like a more expensive watch than is. I just got this and I can see it being my daily wearer for a long time to come. If you want vintage vibes in a watch that has a actual vintage history, this is a really solid choice.P.s. The bracelet it comes with is terrible. This watch is a strap monster and looks infinitely cooler when it’s on a NATO or strap.

Classic Seiko 5 goodness, with MACV-SOG vibes
Eighteen millimeters. Let’s put that right up front, because there’s bad info all over the net about this model for some reason. The lug width is 18mm. The strap/bracelet width to order is 18mm. Eighteen. Not 17, not 20, eighteen. 18. Eight, followed by teen. Get a 10mm strap, then stretch it 8mm wider. So this is a Seiko 5. So much has been written and said about these watches. It’s all correct, except as noted above regarding the lug width. The lume is excellent, the dial is very, very easy to read, and I wish they’d upgrade the movement to have the features the NH35 has. Hacking is good. It makes it easier to set the watch accurately, although a bit of back pressure on this watch’s crown accomplishes about the same thing. And handwinding is even gooder. That’s my biggest complaint about the Seiko watches with this movement. If you have one watch and wear this all the time, it’s not an issue, but if you have many and switch them out not being able to handwind is annoying. You don’t know how much time you have left before it winds down, and the only way to wind it is to shake it, to wear it and be active. And that winds the mainspring a lot slower, less effectively than movements that can handwind. Okay, enough about that. The framed day/date window is a nice touch, especially at such a low price. The case is nice and slim, with comfortable contours and good finishing. The crown is too small. It’s not the easiest crown to use. I won’t use the phrase “change it if I could,” because I can. But I don’t want to, because the way it is it homages, it mimics the 1960s Seikos that were worn by some incredibly tough men fighting for others’ freedom. It was a military issue item. Those are collectors items now. This is very, very similar to those watches; I can see it. The tiny crown means it sits very flush, so it won’t snag. It won’t dig into your wrist. It’s safe and out of the way. So it stays. As you can see, I immediately swapped the steel bracelet for a NATO strap. I like the clasp on the bracelet. The end links integrate very well with the rest of the bracelet. That’s about it. The overall design is too busy for my taste. Varying widths, varying finishes, and as you can see in one of the photos, it doesn’t even move smoothly enough. You can see one of the links hanging up and sticking above the others. It shouldn’t do that. But maybe they know how many people are immediately going to remove it and replace it with nylon or rubber. I don’t know. I also don’t know why they don’t offer it with a nylon, military looking strap. Not a big deal.If you think you’d like this, and you understand the handwinding gripes, go for it.To SSG Walter Ferguson, Jr., still unaccounted for, we remember you and your MIA brothers, and those who returned from defending freedom to continue your lives. Thank you for your service.

    Rugged and/or dressy
First things first, as stated by nearly everyone else, change out bracelet for a band.Just like the “MACV SOG” it’s modeled after, this watch performs amazingly as a rugged field watch, but dresses up nice for formal wear as well. Recently purchased this with a leather band, wore it with a suit to a wedding, and aesthetic was perfect. No complaints on function or movements on this watch. Accuracy seems to be there with little to no change from day to day. Lum works as designed. Comfortable size, not too small, not too big. All in all, great watch, favorite one I now own.

Nice Lumed Numerals and Matte Dial
Among several Seiko 5s I have, I like this dial the most because it doesn’t reflect light back. The matte dial enhances legibility. Not to mention that the dial feels less cluttered than for example the popular SNK809. But the handset isn’t the best when it comes to legibility–if only it was paired with the same “all-white” handset found in the SNKN25 (or the older SNX809). But it still is probably the best choice among Seiko 5 ‘field-watch’ options because the SNKN25 dial just has lumed “pips” (numerals are not lumed unlike with the SNK381), the SNX809 has a case that is polished everywhere and is paired with a white day-date that “swallows” the white hands (the hands gets “lost” when they go over the day-date), and the SNK809 isn’t really a “field-watch” (as opposed to the SNX809 which is). As Seiko 5 watches go, this is a good one. And the item I received works well out of the box.
