The past becomes the present with the new Promaster Dive Automatic men’s watch by Citizen. Going deeper into the history of the original version of this diving watch, it was released in 1989 for the new generation of dive watch enthusiasts. A design element that stands out is the distinctive, serrated bezel design that was inspired by a fugu, the Japanese name for pufferfish. Featuring a 3-piece, 44mm case, sapphire crystal, and a black polyurethane strap, the black rotating bezel with a black easy grip aluminium ring surrounds the green dial and luminous hands and markers, while the case back features an engraving of a pufferfish. This advanced automatic watch features a circa 42 hour power reserve, is ISO compliant with a screw-down crown and water resistance to 200 metres. Presented in an exclusive collector’s dive tank style box.

    Aesthetic homerun, functional strikeout
After waiting for years for Citizen to make a similar Eco-Drive to no avail, I took the plunge and bought this automatic. It is the best looking watch I have ever owned. It is physically and ergonomically perfect for my tastes. Black case – check. Sapphire crystal – check. 44 mm – check (but wears much smaller due to 8 o’clock position of the crown and lug to lug dimension), great markers and hand sizes/shapes – check, 120 click bezel with just the right resistance – check. My only physical complaint would be the thickness. It sits on the wrist like a Big Mac and it is cumbersome dressing or looking at the watch with long sleeve shirts or jackets. I think this is a downside of all automatics and is something I would just have to live with. What I can’t live with, however, is the horrible inaccuracy. I have had this watch for a little over a month now and despite full wind at the beginning, wearing it 24/7, being active and following all of Citizen’s recommendations for automatics, it runs over 9 seconds fast per day. That’s 5 min/month and an hour/year! This from a company that makes Eco-Drives accurate to less than 5 seconds per year! I would never have suspected Citizen to put out something so inaccurate. I can’t even do my job and put minute accurate times on documents without resetting the watch every three days. This watch is going on the shelf where it will continue to look pretty but be completely useless. I have already ordered an Eco-Drive. I don’t like the design or the looks nearly as much but at least it will function and get the job done.
