    Another Great Novel
Agatha Christie’s work is always fantastic, and this may be the best mystery she wrote (my opinion). The story flows and keeps you involved ~ a great read!

Poirot’s greatest failure — thwarted! (By none other than Poirot himself)
In recent months, I have started reading Agatha Christie’s novels. I started with And there were none; then Five Little Pigs; Death on the Nile (my favourite so far); Murder on the Orient Express; and now The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. As I was reading this book, I remarked to a friend that the narrator was funny — but I found the narration a bit limiting. I wasn’t sure why the narrator (a doctor) — who was a murder suspect — would be so involved in every aspect of the investigation (or we would miss those parts that Poirot wouldn’t have taken a doctor on). It wasn’t like the narrator was himself a detective or a junior to Poirot. As it turns out the choice of this narrator is central to the plot of the novel, which I think was a clever twist. It makes you reconsider the way the story was presented from the beginning — facts reported truthfully but only partially so as to mislead as to the culprit. There were, as always, delightfully funny observations about men, women, foreigners, the English, detectives — all tongue in cheek comments which gave me a smile.Caroline (the narrator’s sister) was very funny and her relationship with her brother made me laugh. For example, Caroline is the town gossip and the narrator describes her as having her own Intelligence Corps. Although her brother is the doctor, she diagnoses James and tells him he should “take the blue pill tonight”.As always, Agatha Christie plants little clues throughout the novel, which later on take on great significance. Here, it included for example the narrator’s penchant for fixing mechanical things. Some things that were decisive in Poirot’s detection I don’t think we could have known in advance, like the placement of Roger in a home to hide.Oh! And before I forget the introduction of Poirot was delightful. He moves into the sleepy town of King’s Abbott next to the narrator. They meet because Poirot is growing vegetable marrows and in a fit throws a particularly fine specimen over the wall, landing in the narrator’s garden. What the narrator hoped would be Poirot’s greatest (or only?) failure turned out to be another of his successes. Well done, Poirot!

    wow!! So good!!!
This. Is one of those books where I wont i will not say much but just read the book. Else, i will give away spoilers. Poirot is at the top of his game, and while Christie brings him in later than usual she makes up for it with resplendent showmanship. Poirot is never more powerful than when in retirement, and the murder here leaves everyone scratching heads right up to the end. So beautifully profound. Read, enjoy, and luxuriate in the unfolding of the little masterpieces…

    a fabulous read
The one thing about an Agatha Cristie novel is that you can assured that you will experience a fabulous read. This book was exactly what I needed to feel as if I’d taken a trip in time to someplace unfamiliar. It was fun. It was exciting. It was time spent with characters I grew to care about. It did its job of taking me out of myself and making me feel something about myself

    Much lauded but dated
This book is the pivotal book in MS Christie’s career. It smashes an old framework of mystery stories. That caused a sensation in the day but today it is old. I felt letdown. The book is overly complex with false leads galore. Like the detective I missed his old sidekick Hastings. The spellchecker will not accept any version of the detectives name. Still if you read Christie then you have to read this book.

    Weird font
This book is good, but the font is weird. A reprinted book, so be aware.

    very clever
A smart and well written work. Surprising and clever. What a shocking book for its time. No wonder Agatha is the master of detective works. Recommended.

NO stars or FIVE stars. Illustrated????!!!! I don’t think so!!!!!!
It’s hard to know how many stars to give this. I need two rating charts. The story vs the ebook version. FIVE stars to the story! I love Agatha Christie mysteries! This one was also a great, intriguing, entertaining read! I recommend the story, but not this ebook issue of it. ONE star (and I’m being generous) to this ebook version. To say that it is illustrated is just . . . STUPID! It has a few worthless, simple, symbol-like, ugly graphics. It also had many text errors, which annoy and irritate me. Example: Fiverpool?! Which should have been Liverpool! Many other stupid errors! No publisher should ever put out an edition with that many errors! No excuse for it!

While this is, by far, my favourite of the Poirot series, it was also the easiest to solve. That doesn’t diminish anything about the story, it’s just that the more of her books that you read, the more Christie trains you to recognize and interpret clues, and she leaves a lot of clues out there in this one. Don’t judge it by modern standards, because it wasn’t written for modern audiences, and if it seems overly familiar, it’s because it’s been constantly imitated for almost a century. Great book.

I’ve read the book before and know it to be great. I ordered it as a last-minute christmas gift (so too late to return it and get a new one by the 24th), but am very disappointed by the shape in which it arrived. The packaging doesn’t look beat-up at all, so from the state of the book I can only conclude that it must have been used rather than new. Very disappointed.
