If you like the design, go for it
UNDONE is a relatively small Hong Kong-based watchmaker that is known for the level of customization it offers with its timepieces. They make a lot of watches with retro designs that draw upon tried and true style motifs. They’re nice looking watches, and well made.Watch people are an interesting bunch. Collecting watches is a “thing,” and for collectors, a $265 watch is, believe it or not, a very inexpensive watch. But despite its relative “bargain” pricing (again, based on watch hobbyist frame of reference), UNDONE has gotten a lot of press in horology circles by offering very tasteful designs coupled with high quality (but not extravagant) movements and, most critically, by allowing for a dizzying array of watch customization for little or no extra cost. The press they’ve received has been generally quite positive, with the prevailing sentiment being that they offer a high-quality product at an unusually (again, for watch people) low price.But it’s the customization angle that really sets UNDONE apart. And this complicates assessing value when purchasing through Amazon, because when purchasing here, you’re essentially stuck with a ‘stock’ watch and you don’t get any of the customization options that you’d get through the UNDONE site. If you happen to really love the vintage “salmon” design on offer here, then great. But otherwise, it probably makes more sense to buy directly from UNDONE.In any case, what you get with this specific watch is a well-regarded Seiko quartz watch movement that also incorporates a mechanical chronograph. These sorts of hybrid quartz / mechanical movements are sometimes referred to as meca-quartz movements. They don’t have the charm or cache of a fully mechanical/automatic movement (again, watch people are weird), but you do benefit from the increased accuracy of a quartz controlled basic timepiece while getting some of the tactile and operational appeal of a mechanical chronograph (sweeping second hand, instant reset to the 12 position with the push of a button). This watch uses a hardened mineral crystal, which isn’t going to be quite as scratch resistant as sapphire, but will offer a reasonable level of protection in typical everyday use.A few little things to keep in mind, particularly if you’ve not encountered this type of timepiece before. The little video that is shared in the listing is somewhat deceptive, in that it shows a sweeping second hand in a manner that might lead you to believe that the second hand will be forever sweeping its way round and round on this watch, as it would do with an automatic watch. But, in fact, the second hand here is part of the chronograph function and it only sweeps when the chronograph is activated (by pushing the upper case button). So don’t fret that your watch is broken if the second hand appears “stuck” at 12:00 position — that’s the way this movement is designed to operate.I think this is an attractive watch and I have no reservations recommending it if you happen to like the style. It is well made, will hold some of its value, and should last a long time while maintaining good accuracy.But there are a few caveats:* As noted above, if you’re interested in UNDONE watches, I strongly suggest that you check out their site first to see all of the customization options you get there. It’s generally considered one of their main selling points.* Because this watch fundamentally uses a quartz movement, it is battery operated; eventually (typically after 2-3 years) you’ll have to deal with battery replacement* Water resistance isn’t great, so you’ll have to take some care with this piece; I wouldn’t wear it in the shower, for instance, and definitely wouldn’t take it on a swim* In my opinion, the two smaller dials (“complications”) offered with this particular ‘meca-quartz’ movement aren’t very useful; the right one just shows how far you are into a 24-hour day, which isn’t really a necessary function when one has windows to peer out of to determine whether it is AM or PM; the left dial is simply a minute counter for the chronograph (which has a maximum runtime of 60 minutes, hence the 0-60 scale here), so the smaller left dial is only going to be of use on those occasions when you’re using the chronograph to time things that take between 1 and 60 minutes.Those caveats notwithstanding, this is a very attractive and high quality watch that would make a lovely gift or add some unique style to an existing collection.
